YIB Welcome week : September 2017

We were delighted to see over 120 1st year YIB students at our Welcome Week presentation in the first week of term after which we talked informally over tea and cakes.

We were also joined by 3 students just back from placement, Freddy (E.ON), Shuvangi (design codes, Kolkata) and Jack (Volkswagon)  who shared details of their placements and their advice for students. We were delighted to welcome the Enactus Society for the first time to this meeting and
Andrea and Marco talked about how the programme could help those looking to secure placements. More information can be read here:http://yearinbusiness.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/v-behaviorurldefaultvmlo.html

Freddy Ihnen: Commercial Analyst at E.ON
Shuvangi Sen Chaudhury : Digital Marketing Intern at design codes (Kolkata)

Jack Skinner: Fleet Supply placement student - Volkswagon
Dr Catherine Harbor, Academic Director for the programme, talked about the many benefits to students of securing a placement year while Katharine Radford (YIB Programme Officer) and Rae Roberts (YIB Careers' Consultant) talked about the support available to students and the active programme of events taking place across the year.

The forthcoming events included :
>  25th September Placement event within the School of Management
>  27th September Part time jobs fair within the Students' Union
> 4th October Linkedin Day (including free professional photography) in the Davsion building
> w/c 9th October : Business and Finance week - series of workshops involving Extenral companies
Details of future Careers events can be found here:https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/students/jobs-careers/events/go-to-a-careers-event.aspx

YIBs were encouraged to gain work experience on their CVs and actively participate in clubs and societies in order to develop their core competency skills (eg leadership, teamwork, initiative). Students were also reminded that they needed to secure a 60% average in their first year in order to stay on the programme into the 2nd year.

We now have a Placements Place (office 10 of the Moore building) where students can come and meet the YIB support team, Katharine Radford and Sonia Dhaliwal and get answers to any questions they have.
